Why are we having this workshop?  
 
I am Dr. Ron Gillilan, cardiologist and Program Director for this 6th gathering of health professionals, scientists, artists, religious leaders, and healers. We wish to share our perspectives on the connection between spirituality and health.

Dr. Raymond Bahr, Founder of Chest Pain Emergency Rooms, who published an often quoted research study on the effectiveness of music therapy for patients in a coronary care unit will introduce the keynote speaker for this workshop, Don Campbell.

 

Who should attend? Why?
  • Anyone with interest or training in the health care field. Discover from leading medical/religious professionals ways of integrating spirituality into compassionate care of the sick.
  • Anyone with a special gift/skill of healing or caring for the sick. Have fellowship with others who have a deep and abiding concern for those who are ill.
  • Anyone who believes he/she may have a gift/aptitude, yet undeveloped, for caring for the sick. Explore the possibilities and learn what you can do for the sick.
  • Anyone who simply wants to know more about the connection between health and spirituality. Hear and evaluate the growing scientific data showing an association between health and spirituality.
  • Anyone especially in need of prayer for healing. Receive help from a caring ministry team, in a private setting.
  • Come all, and be a part of a developing, loving, supporting community of healers, in process of being healed. We welcome you!

Keynote Address: “Do No Harm; Instill Harmony.”

Don Campbell, author of “The Harmony of Health,” will guide us through a fascinating evening of research, inspiration and experiences for creating harmonious environments for the health and well being of ourselves and others.

Don Campbell, internationally known lecturer, recognized authority on the transforming power of sound, music, and listening, author of 21 books, including the bestsellers “The Mozart Effect”® and “The Mozart Effect for Children”® which have been translated into 26 languages. Don, a classically trained musician, composer, scholar, and consultant to symphony orchestras, has traveled to over 40 countries and is the founder of the Institute for Music, Health, and Education.

 

Saturday's Panels and Workshop

Don Campbell Workshop 1: Prescribing Music in Healthcare. A balanced diet of sound is essential for attentiveness, concentration, relaxation and emotional release. Understanding the basic anatomy of sound, how the ear assimilates rhythms and frequencies that modify physical response, assists us in the choice of music at home and at work. Music can be a powerful adjunct for healing.

Don Campbell Workshop 2: Awakening Your Mind and Creativity
. From the wide array of conversations around The Mozart Effect® to the practical use of music to enhance language, movement, and expression, this session teaches techniques that parents, teachers and businesses use to help clear the mind, awaken creative process and enrich memory.

Joy Weydert M.D.: The New Medicine. Joy brings a rich background of experience in clinical & Integrative Medicine, as well as elements of spirituality, to focus on a new and promising approach to health care that is now emerging in the USA.

Joy Weydert, MD, Chief of Integrative Pain Management at Children’s Mercy Hospital, Kansas City, graduated U. of Kansas Medical School in 1990, has Board Certification in Pediatrics, & completed Integrative Medicine Fellowship with Dr. Andrew Weil in 2002.

Presentation: Shaman MD. A doctor finds healing in native ways. Eve Bruce, MD, a plastic surgeon, speaks her life’s story of training in allopathic and indigenous medicine, as described in her book of the same title.

Eve Bruce, MD A highly successful Maryland area board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon works in Central & South America, studied the indigenous healing practices, and is the first non-Quechua woman to be initiated in the Circle of Yachaks (bird people shamans of the Andes).

Ed Fields, Workshop: Navajo Traditional Spirituality, Christianity, and Alternative Treatments. Ed will touch on the similarities between Traditional Native healing, Christian healing beliefs, and Energy Psychology, suggesting that we are all one in mind, body and spirit. Participants will learn, in a “hands on” experience, an energy psychology technique for self-application.

Edward Fields, Ph.D., a Clinical Psychologist with 16 years experience in the Indian Health Service, has focus on integration of Native Traditional Spirituality and Christian Spirituality into the practice of Western Medicine. Ed uses Energy Psychology in therapy and does lay ministry, as an elder, in the Community of Christ Church.

Richard Gillilan, Presentation: Science & Spirituality: Uneasy Partners in the Quest for Truth. Is science too skeptical? Is spirituality not skeptical enough? What are the limitations of science? If science can tell us about spirituality, are we sure we want to know? Richard will discuss the basic methods of science, drawing upon both historical and modern examples of common pitfalls on the way to enlightenment.

Richard Gillilan, Ph.D., a scientist specializing in structural biology and x-ray science at Cornell University’s High-Energy Synchrotron Source, has authored numerous papers. His scientific artwork and animations have been shown internationally. He appeared in the documentary “The Age of Viruses.”

Gina Sager, M.D., RYT, Workshop I: Morning Yoga. Yoga means “union” the integration of mind, body and spirit. We’ll stretch, breathe and become aware of this amazing body-perhaps in a new way.
Gina Sager, M.D., RYT, Workshop II: Introduction to Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction.
Enhance your ability to manage the ordinary and extraordinary stresses of life.

Gina Sager, MD, a retired surgeon, studied Tibetan Buddhism and has practiced yoga since 1991. She trained in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction with Jon Kabat-Zinn.

A senior pastor shares his experiences and stories of visits with ill patients and their families. There is wealth of wise counsel here, for those who desire to have a meaningful visit with the ill.

Vianne Launius, Usui Reiki Master/ Teacher, Workshop: Reiki. Discussion & demonstration of the healing power of this ancient hands-on modality

Ruth Goodwin, ACSW, MSW, Workshop: Family Focus; From Chaos to Compassion. Ruth draws upon her 17 years of successful work with families in crises, through story telling, playful activities, drawing on spirituality, maybe a miracle or two and chocolate, to teach ways to create healing and peace when working with challenging persons, systems & work environments.

You are Invited to the Closing Event for the Workshop on Sunday, April 20, at Community of Christ Church, 3000 Baybriar Rd., Dundalk, Maryland. Speaker for the 11 AM Service is Becky Savage, R.N., of the First Presidency, from the Church’s International Headquarters in Independence, Missouri.

Becky Savage was ordained in 2007, the first woman to hold the position, a member of the Quorum of the First Presidency at the International Headquarters of the Community of Christ in Independence MO. Becky was born in Guatemala, has a master's degree in nursing from the University of Kansas, has been Director of Nursing in Hospitals in Florida and Kansas City, served as Professor of Nursing and received her Master of Arts in Religion from Graceland University. She is an experienced Christian Minister, having served the church both in Florida and Missouri.

  • Registration: $75 (spouse $35), including the cost of continental breakfast, breaks, buffet luncheon and banquet.
  • No charge for Students, Residents, Interns; must register in advance if attend the luncheon or banquet.
